Minimally Invasive

Children's Hospital & Medical Center is the region's leader in developing and performing new and innovative pediatric minimally invasive surgical procedures that are making surgery less demanding and more comfortable to the patient.

Recent advances in medical technology have made it possible to treat a wide variety of conditions using minimally invasive procedures. Minimally invasive surgery involves the use of tiny incisions to correct surgical problems. Procedures that previously required large incisions with significant cosmetic implications can now be done through tiny incisions that produce minimal scarring, less pain, fewer complications and allows your child to return to normal activities much sooner.

The pediatric surgeons at Children's use the most advanced pediatric laparoscopic equipment available that is specially designed to perform these delicate procedures in children as tiny as premature babies. All four pediatric surgeons are experienced in a wide variety of minimally invasive procedures which are offered to your child as an alternative to traditional surgery whenever possible.

How is minimally invasive surgery performed?
Minimally invasive surgery involves the use of tiny surgical equipment combined with the assistance of a video camera to perform surgical procedures. During the procedure, small incisions from 3 millimeters to up to half an inch are made through which plastic tubes called ports are then inserted. The camera and the instruments are introduced through these ports which allow access to the inside of the patient.

The camera transmits an image of the organs inside the abdomen onto a television monitor, which becomes the surgeon's eyes while performing the operation.

Benefits of minimally invasive or laparoscopic procedures:

  • Less postoperative discomfort due to smaller incisions
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Quicker recovery times
  • Quicker return to full activities
  • Smaller scars
  • Less internal scarring
