Resources For Your Family
To make you and your child as comfortable as possible during your time at Children's, we offer the following services.
The Carolyn Scott Rainbow House is located at 7815 Harney Street. It offers an affordable "home-away-from-home" for families needing overnight accommodations. Any family who lives more than 60 miles away is eligible to use the Rainbow House. A shuttle bus is available to transport families to and from Children's at 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.; 4:30, 6:30, 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. Please call Ext. 7815 30 minutes before the scheduled time.
Social Work staff is available to all families who need supportive counseling or have financial or legal concerns. Social work staff can provide community resources and serve as liaison to community services and can assist with discharge planning. Parents who would like to see a social worker should contact their nurse or call the Social Work
Department at Ext. 5418.
Child Life Specialists and Child Life Assistants work in patient care areas throughout the hospital and outpatient clinics. These specialists can provide preparation and distraction for medical procedures, play opportunities, medical play and support. Play rooms and activity centers are available to patients who are not under isolation restrictions. Only patients are allowed to play in the activity/playroom. Family, friends and siblings may stay with the patient in the activity/playroom only with adult supervision. If you have any questions about the activity/playroom, please ask.
Online Health Library
The online health library is a comprehensive library covering critical childhood health topics, from stages of growth and development to disease and injury prevention.
Kids Keep up With Education
A certified teacher is available to provide tutoring services to patients who will be away from school for an extended time. Please ask a staff member if you would like to visit with the teacher.
For children, the ability to interact with a certified therapy dog can have a very positive impact upon their quality of life. Interacting with a pet can sometimes enhance recovery following a serious illness. Certified canine visitors come to Children's every Thursday morning for about two hours to visit our patients. Therapy dogs meet infection control guidelines, and are escorted to the patient rooms by a Child Life Specialist.
Pastoral and Spiritual Care
Children's Pastoral and Spiritual Care department provides spiritual support to patients and families. A chapel is located behind the Gift Shop on the lobby level. Tune in to services on the hospital TV, channel 40. To contact a chaplain, call Ext. 5663 or dial 0 for the hospital operator.
