Signs of a Problem

Children of all ages can be affected by sleep difficulties, but sleep problems are most common among children between the ages of 18 months and 5 years. It is important for you to discuss any concerns regarding your child's sleep habits with your child's doctor. Once a physician has ruled out any medical cause for your child's sleep difficulty, a physician or a behavioral health professional can help you determine whether assessment and/or intervention is warranted. There are numerous types of sleep disorders and each has its own unique set of symptoms. So how do you determine if your child has a sleep problem and whether it is severe enough to require treatment?  If your child exhibits any of the following symptoms below, you should consider having him or her evaluated by a sleep medicine specialist.

Signs of a sleep problem may include:

  • Falls asleep during short car rides
  • Falls asleep during school
  • Complains of being tired all of the time
  • Is not rested after a full night's sleep
  • Exhibits behavioral problems
