About The Heart Center
As a parent there is nothing more dear to you than the health of your own child. So when your child has a serious heart condition, you want to be sure he or she is in safe and competent hands. At Children's Hospital & Medical Center Heart Center, we specialize in mending the tiny hearts of babies less than two pounds all the way through adulthood. The Heart Center at Children's is the largest and most comprehensive pediatric and adult congenital cardiac center in the Heartland. We provide 98 percent of all heart surgeries, catheterizations and care to children in Nebraska as well as to patients in western Iowa, Kansas and North and South Dakota.
Our staff is committed to providing you and your child the most advanced and sophisticated care available in a caring and compassionate environment. At Children's, we believe the family, is an integral part of the care process. We actively engage patients and families as partners in their care experience to provide a more personal and customized care plan. This involves regularly seeking two-way open and honest communication during every step of the way so that you can help us identify goals specific to your child's needs to ensure your child receives the best care possible.
Our experienced cardiac team includes a multi-disciplinary staff of specialized cardiologists, anesthesiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, pediatric intensivists, neonatologists, perinatologists, nurses and other clinicians that work closely together to manage the care of patients ranging from the unborn fetus to children, adolescents as well as adults with congenital heart disease. Each plays a vital role in the diagnosis, care and successful recovery of your child and brings his or her own unique skills and knowledge to the care process to ensure we meet all of the special needs of each and every child.
We treat patients with a myriad of heart conditions, many of which are unique to infants and children, including congenital heart disease (conditions that are present before birth), acquired heart disease (conditions caused by problems after birth), heart murmurs (most of which are not caused by a heart condition), irregular heart rhythms and chest pain (most of which are not caused by a heart condition). Congenital heart disease, which refers to structural problems of the heart and vessels, comprises approximately 90 percent of our cardiac surgical cases. Treating these patients often requires complex surgical repair of the tiny hearts and vessels of infants and children. Our staff has the experience, specialized training and knowledge needed to understand the intricacies of treating the most complex cardiac cases and have achieved outcomes that are among the highest in the country.
Many of our cardiologists and surgeons are involved in innovative research in conjunction with the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Creighton University Medical Center that allows our patients to be the first to receive some of the newest and most cutting edge treatments available.
Among our many research interests are advanced echocardiographic imaging, cardiac MRI, percutaneous closure devices for congenital heart defects, development of tissue graft alternatives for surgical repair of major blood vessels from the heart, care, surveillance and education of patients with single ventricle heart disease, assessment and intervention of patients with neurodevelopmental delays associated with congenital heart disease.
As the largest and most comprehensive pediatric and congenital cardiac center in the region, we see more than 3,200 outpatient visits each year at Children's and approximately 600 visits at our outreach clinics that includes a regional network of locations with nine clinic locations outside of Omaha in Nebraska, South Dakota and western Iowa. Our pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons perform more than 350 cardiothoracic surgeries a year and our pediatric cardiologists perform a similar number of cardiac catheterizations. We treat each case with the utmost dedication and personalized care that has contributed to our highly successful outcomes that rival some of the largest pediatric medical centers in the nation.
