NICU Follow-Up Clinic

If your baby spent time in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children’s Nebraska, or had cardiac surgery at a young age, they may be referred to our NICU Follow-Up Clinic.

Our clinic is designed to monitor your baby’s developmental progress through their early years of life, up to age 3. Our neonatology specialists meet with you and your baby for three two-hour visits at different developmental stages, observing and evaluating your baby to identify any concerns and, if needed, refer you to a specialist to address those concerns.

Addressing potential developmental delays or disabilities early helps improve children’s ability to learn new skills and increase their success in school life. This early intervention is most effective because the connections in a child’s brain that are responsible for learning, behavioral and health are most adaptable during the first three years.

If our team decides your child doesn’t need to be referred to another specialist, your child can maintain regular check-ups with their pediatrician.

What Sets Children’s Apart?

Children’s offers the only Level IV NICU in Nebraska, giving the smallest, most fragile babies the best possible outcomes with the most advanced level of neonatal care available.

We work as a multidisciplinary team that specializes solely in caring for babies and children. In addition to our doctors, your child’s team may include other specialists, including physical therapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists.

Our NICU Follow-Up Clinic is part of Developmental TIPS (Tracking Infant Progress Statewide), one of the country’s largest standardized follow-up developmental programs for babies.

Developmental TIPS is a collaborative program supporting optimal growth, developmental and behavioral outcomes for children and their families. The program is coordinated by the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s (UNMC) Munroe-Meyer Institute and funded by the Nebraska Departments of Health and Human Services and Education.
