Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)

A simple, painless test that evaluates the electrical activity of the heart, performed by attaching tiny electrodes to stickers placed on the patient’s arms, legs and chest.

Special preparation required: None

Length of actual test: About 5 minutes

Uses - EKGs are used to evaluate:
• The rhythm of the heart
• The heart muscle for signs of disease or injury
• Symptomatic complaints, including palpitations, dizziness, fainting and chest pain
• The effect of medications on heart rate and rhythm

Sedation/anesthesia required: No

Post-testing restrictions: Your child will be able to resume normal activities immediately.
