Liver Clinic

The Liver Clinic at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center specializes in treating children with complex and rare liver diseases.  Children with these diseases, which are often difficult to treat, receive highly specialized care from a multi-disciplinary staff, comprised of Pediatric Gastroenterologists, Pediatric Hepatologists, Pediatric Surgeons, a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Registered Dieticians and Registered Nurses.

Clinical Service Chief, Ruben Quiros MD, Pediatric Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist, has dedicated his practice to treating and managing pediatric patients with liver diseases.  Many of these diseases are chronic conditions that can be managed and controlled with proper medical care.  While the goal is to avoid or postpone liver transplant, some patients may eventually need a transplant.  The Liver Clinic team works closely with the transplant team to care for these patients, both before and after the transplant.

Some of the more common conditions treated include:

  • Auto immune hepatitis
  • Chronic viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B and C)
  • Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
  • Chronic metabolic liver disease
  • Non alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Neonatal cholestasis
  • Biliary Atresia
