Bereavement Support

Child life specialists can help children cope with the grief associated with the death of a loved one. Through developmentally appropriate interventions child life specialists can help children understand the patient’s diagnosis and prognosis, what to expect at end of life and help facilitate activities to promote positive coping.

Interventions may include:
• Discussions to evaluate their understanding and clarify misconceptions
• Activities to develop memories and legacy building
• Expressive arts to promote positive emotional outlets

Child life specialists can also serve as a resource to caregivers by:
• Sharing typical developmental responses to grief
• Educating your child about death and dying
• Establishing coping techniques
• Providing community resources
