Speak Up

Hospitals across the country are working to make health care safety a priority, and everyone plays a role in this effort. As a parent, we invite you to be a part of our health care team. This means we want you to be involved in your child's care to the extent you are comfortable. At Children's Hospital & Medical Center, we believe that you know your child best. This philosophy is endorsed by the Joint Commission. Its "Speak Up" program urges parents to get involved in their child's care. This initiative provides simple advice on how you, as the parent, can help make your child's care a safe and positive experience.

Speak up if you have questions or concerns. If you don't understand, ask again.

  • Your child's health is too important to worry about being embarrassed if there's something you don't understand.
  • Be sure to tell health care professionals if you think they have confused your child with another patient.
  • Call Condition Help at Ext. 2633 if you feel something isn't right with your child. A medical team will come and see your child.  

Pay attention to the care you child is receiving.

  • Tell your nurse or doctor if something doesn't seem right.
  • Don't be afraid to tell the nurse or doctor if you think your child is about to get the wrong medicine.
  • Expect health care workers to introduce themselves when they enter the room. Look for their identification badges.
  • Did your caregivers wash their hands? If not, remind them to do so. Hand washing is the most important way to prevent infections. Don't be afraid to remind a nurse or doctor to do this.
  • Make sure nurses and doctors confirm your child's identity by checking the wristband before administering medications or treatment.
  • Expect the hospital environment to be safe. Make sure safety belts are used in high chairs and strollers, and that children wear non-slip shoes or slippers.
  • Only visitors with a PROX card will be allowed onto the unit. They must also have ID bands or stickers.
