Child Life Student Services

Childrens Hospital and Medical Center’s accredited child life internship sets high standards for students to prepare them for child life certification and employment. The program allows students the opportunity to learn the working aspects of a pediatric setting and enhance clinical skills. Internship opportunities are offered twice a year during the fall and spring semesters with a planned schedule of 16 weeks for 40 hours per week with a total of up to 640 hours.

Throughout the internship, interns receive and maintain primary supervision from a Certified Child Life Specialist and Internship Coordinator. Internship consists of completion of orientation that includes essential teaching modules as well as observation in all clinical routines. Possible rotations include:

  • General medical/surgical inpatient units
  • Hematology/Oncology & Infusion Center
  • Radiology
  • Emergency Department
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Cardiac Care Unit (CCU)
  • Pre/Post Surgical Unit

During your internship you will have the opportunity to complete various experiences to enhance your learning such as case studies, internship project, observations in various settings and completion of the ACLP module recommendations. Some examples include medical play, charting, preparation, grief and bereavement, professionalism, volunteer program, coping and distraction, etc.

Program Prerequisites

Academic affiliation is required to be eligible for internship. A contract between the hospital and the attending school must be negotiated prior to the start of an internship.

Accepted interns into the program must submit the required health forms prior to the start of an internship.
