My name is Andrew Macfadyen. I am a physician in the pediatric ICU (intensive care unit) here at Children’s Hospital, as well as a member of the Hand in Hand Pediatric Palliative Care Program. In the PICU, we get the sickest of the sick children. Our kids have life-threatening illnesses. Some of our kids come after surgery, and they just need to be watched closer to make sure nothing bad happens. I couldn’t imagine being in that situation and that feeling of helplessness. Hopefully, we’re able to reassure them and give them some hope. The care in the PICU is very personalized, and there is an ICU doctor in-house 24 hours a day 7 days a week. There is an intensiveness there for their child for however much they need, whenever time they need it — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year  We have a commitment to making sure that the kids get the highest quality care they can — and that they get it here.
